Sami was calm when the jet landed in the airfield, but the situation will happen how it did.

“I’ll sit tight here,” Georgie glanced at the tarmac. “That car looks damn uncomfortable.”

“Yeah. I’ll have to sit up front,” Cash left his seat and headed for the door.

I smiled at Sami, “You survived your first jet trip.”

She sighed, “It wasn’t long.”

“It’s still a full flight,” Georgie pointed out. “We’ll head to Jersey after this. Maybe you’ll count it as one way.”

Sami smiled, “I’ll have the landing and take-off feeling down pat by then.” She followed Cash to the door.

“I’ll hit you up if there’s an issue,” I told Georgie.

He nodded. I exited the jet.

Noise whirled and echoed with a quick burst of air. Sami paused on the steps. We looked up as the plane above went higher. It was her first time seeing it from the airfield. Sami’s eyes widened as she silently watched the sky. The wind shifted. Sami blinked a few times but kept her eyes on the plane until the flashing lights were a good distance away. She went down the steps and to the car. Cash told the driver we were headed to 49th & Spruce Street to pick up another person. He took the passenger’s seat to give us privacy. We needed it because her hands started shaking when the car left the airfield.

I tried calming her, “Dionne will be there.”

“I hope so,” Sami replied in a raspy whisper. “I keep thinking she’ll be scared and run off.”

“You’ll see her,” I kissed her forehead. “This is only half the trip.”

Sami sighed, “I know. I’ll have to see Burke.”

We reached Spruce Street ten minutes later. The car stopped at the curb. The brick five-story building formed a U shape around the courtyard. We left the car. Sami tapped the phone to call Dionne. She hurried to wait on the path near the entrance. Cash and I stood further back.

The elevator doors opened. The girls stepped out and walked across the lobby. Dionne looked exactly like Sami complete with big brown eyes and midnight black curls.

Cash shook his head, “Ethan would’ve spotted them a mile away. They’re damn near identical, same as us.”

I nodded to agree but kept my eyes on the girls. Shakira hugged Dionne and then waved to Sami. She stopped at the door. Dionne left the building and came down the steps clutching a backpack. She reached her sister.

Sami grabbed her arms and started shaking her. “I told you not to go with Mom. You could’ve been killed. I got hurt taking care of it.”

Dionne was trembling while Sami was quietly raging. Cash was about to intervene. He knew firsthand how it felt to be in that situation from all the scrapes he got into. Sami was relieved and frustrated from having to deal with it in the first place. I understood and gave her space. Cash looked at me. “Give it a second,” I told him.

Dionne released a broken sob. Sami snapped out of it.
